Phubbing is a behavior where an individual ignores those around them in a social setting, disrupting interpersonal communication by focusing solely on their smartphone. The aim of this research is to examine the impact of factors such as social connectedness and fear of missing out (FOMO) on phubbing, a negative technology-related behavior. Data was collected from 302 participants with diverse demographic characteristics via an online survey. The Phubbing Scale, the Fear of Missing Out Scale, and the Social Connectedness Scale, all derived from the literature, were used as data collection tools. The structural validity and reliability of the scales were tested, followed by correlation, independent samples t-test, and linear regression analyses. The findings showed a positive and significant relationship between FOMO and phubbing, while a negative relationship was found between these two variables and social connectedness. While no significant differences were found based on gender, significant differences were found in social connectedness levels based on age group and education level. The study aims to contribute to the literature by theoretically revealing the relationships between social connectedness and FOMO. Practically, the findings are expected to help understand the negative consequences of digital addiction and social media use. Thus, it is hoped that this will contribute to the development of strategies for individuals to prevent or reduce these behaviors.
